The 5 Biggest Mistakes We Make When Packing (And How to Avoid Them)

Packing for a holiday should feel exciting, but for many of us it quickly becomes overwhelming. We stand in front of the wardrobe convinced we have nothing to wear, then somehow end up with a suitcase full of clothes and still feel like we have no outfits.

As a personal stylist, I've seen the same packing mistakes time and time again. The good news? They're all easy to avoid once you know what to look for.

1. Packing for 'just in case'

This is by far the biggest mistake.

We pack extra dresses just in case we go somewhere fancy, another pair of jeans just in case it gets cold, and three extra tops just in case we change our minds. Before you know it, your suitcase is overflowing with items you'll never wear.

Instead, pack for the holiday you're actually taking, not the one you imagine might happen. If your itinerary is mostly sightseeing and relaxed dinners, focus on versatile pieces that suit those occasions.

2. Packing individual outfits instead of mix-and-match pieces

Many people pack complete outfits that only work one way. The result? Lots of clothes but very few outfit options.

Choose pieces that all work together. A small collection of tops, bottoms and layers that can be mixed and matched will create far more outfits than a suitcase full of unrelated items.

This is exactly why I love using the Sudoku Packing Method, which helps you create dozens of outfit combinations from just a handful of carefully chosen pieces.

3. Taking too many shoes

Shoes are one of the heaviest and bulkiest items in your suitcase.

You rarely need more than three pairs:

  • A comfortable walking shoe.

  • A sandal or everyday shoe.

  • A smarter option for evenings, if your holiday calls for it.

Choose neutral colours that work with everything you've packed and you'll save both space and weight.

4. Forgetting the power of accessories

Accessories take up very little room but completely transform an outfit.

A colourful scarf, statement earrings, a belt or a different handbag can make the same dress or linen trousers look completely different from one day to the next.

Rather than packing more clothes, pack a few well-chosen accessories that add personality and variety.

5. Leaving packing until the last minute

Rushing almost always leads to overpacking.

When you're stressed, it's much easier to throw extra items into your suitcase "just in case". Taking a little time to plan your outfits beforehand means you'll pack with intention rather than panic.

I always recommend laying everything out a day or two before you travel. Seeing your outfits together makes it much easier to spot any gaps and remove unnecessary items.

Pack Smarter, Travel Lighter

Packing isn't about taking more clothes, it's about taking the right clothes.
